Muqdisho Hope Center

About us

To protect nurture and provide a loving and caring home for orphaned and vulnerable girls by educating and training them in lifelong and marketable skills to become proud members of the community.

WHY ORPHAN AND VULNERABLE GIRLS?

Young girls are disproportionately vulnerable to societal evils than boys. Their physiological susceptibility is greater than boys, and is fueled by poverty, their low status, unequal economic rights, and educational opportunities, which place them at more risk to sexual exploitation, trafficking and abuse.

DEFINITION OR ORPHAN AND VULNERABLE GIRL

A girl who have lost one or both parents are tagged as orphans while a vulnerable girl is who because of circumstance of birth or immediate environment is prone to abuse or deprivation of basic needs, care and protection, and thus disadvantaged relative to her peers. Below are the categories of target girls the Hope Center will cater for:

  1. Girl who have lost one or both parents.
  2. Girl living with terminally or chronically ill parents.
  3. Girl living with aged or frail grand parents.
  4. Abandoned girl child.
  5. Internally displaced or separated girl child.

WHY LOCATE IN MUQDISHO?

Somalia was created in 1960 from former British protectorate and an Italian colony with Muqdisho as its capital. The country collapsed into anarchy following the overthrow of the military regime of president Siad Barre in 1991. However, the two relatively peaceful northern regions of Somaliland and Puntland effectively broke away leaving the capital Muqdisho with the turmoil of a prolonged war.

This prolonged war took its toll on the weak and vulnerable members of the community, especially, women and children. A large member of these children are little girls who are perceived in our society as a great burden. The quality of life of these girls is most deplorable.

They wander around and live in unsuitable shelters with vast majority of orphaned girls getting raped and abused.

Against this background, the promoters decided to locate the Hope Center in Muqdisho to forestall such abuse.
